CBEH joins discussion on the future of private health insurance in Australia

9 Nov 2017

Dr Marcin Sowa from CBEH, together with Dr Josh Byrnes and Prof Paul Scuffham from Griffith University, made a submission to the Senate Inquiry on the value and affordability of private health insurance in Australia. The Parliamentary report under preparation is a long-expected step toward consolidating voices and opinions heard in a lasting policy debate, with the prospect of guiding the future of this important pillar of health care financing.

Dr Sowa and colleagues provided insights on the cost-effectiveness of various policy reforms, relative to maintaining the status quo, considering costs to the public budget and levels of private health insurance uptake achieved in each policy scenario. Their submission, which can be viewed here, was based on a research article recently published in the academic journal Applied Health Economics and Health Policy.
