Barriers to eliminating tuberculosis in low Incidence countries

Eliminating tuberculosis (TB) in low incidence countries remains an important public health goal. While testing for active TB infection among new entrants from high incidence countries offers an effective surveillance strategy, monitoring and treatment is also required for individuals with latent TB infection. Using interviews with advisers, planners, service providers and clients, low prioritization of latent TB infection emerged as a common theme that impacted on management, service delivery, health literacy, and health care access and represents a barrier to the elimination of TB.
